What BB-8 originally looked like in early ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ designs

One of the better things about Star Wars: The Force Awakens was its introduction of exciting new characters. From Rey and Poe Dameron to Kylo Ren and Finn, the new characters JJ Abrams added to the already expansive Star Wars universe felt completely natural.

Of course, the most beloved addition to the ever expanding list of Star Wars characters has to be BB-8, the quirky and lovable little droid who initially accompanies Poe Dameron before being picked up by Rey early on in the film.

Now interestingly enough, MovieWeb directs us to some images taken from the recently released book The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The book provides a detailed and fascinating look at some of the early concept art Lucasfilm’s art department developed while the movie was being produced. Of particular interest are some of the early renderings of BB-8, which you can see below.

As you can tell from the first image, it seems that BB-8’s design varied only slightly from its final form. Here we see that its bottom half in early drawings was a bit less spherical than the final design. You’ll also note that the top half of BB-8 is connected to the bottom, a design choice that was ultimately abandoned.
